EARTH EYES · FIELD GUIDE

How to use this window

Earth Eyes is a live view of the planet, assembled from open data. Nothing here needs setting up — this guide simply says what is where, and how to reach it.

The globe

Drag to turn the planet. Scroll — or pinch on a trackpad — to move closer. The camera keeps a small clearance above the ground, so the view settles rather than sinking into the surface.
The row of round buttons at the top centre holds the globe actions: clear the selected data layers, copy a share link, tilt the view, return to north-up, and reset to the full planet.
Press ` for a small frames-per-second readout in the corner, and press it again to hide it.
With a Google Maps key configured, cities render as photorealistic 3D. Without one, the globe falls back to satellite imagery and stays fully usable.

Live cameras

The Cameras layer holds about 3,900 public traffic and roadside cameras. Roughly 430 of them stream live video; the rest publish still frames.
Turn it on in DATA LAYERS ▸ Cameras, then open the CCTV panel on the right. NEAREST flies to the camera closest to your view; PREV and NEXT step through the catalog.
If the nearest camera turns out to be offline, Earth Eyes quietly moves on to the nearest one that is live, so you never land on a dead frame.
A camera whose facing was never surveyed is labelled ESTIMATED, and its coverage outline draws dashed rather than solid.
The CCTV panel is portable: drag its header to float it, resize it from any edge, and double-click the header to send it back to the rail. It remembers where you left it.
AUTO HOP steps to the next camera on a timer, and snaps to the nearest one whenever you move the view to a new region.

Street level

Street Level lays photographs of the ground over the globe. Turn it on in DATA LAYERS ▸ Street Level.
Provider chips choose the source: Mapillary is available by default, and Google Street View appears when a Google Maps key is configured.
360° and FLAT filter the imagery by shape, and SINCE limits it to pictures captured after a given date.
In the viewer, EXPAND enlarges the image, FIT and FILL choose how it sits in the frame, and FOLLOW lets the globe camera follow wherever you look.

Data layers

DATA LAYERS groups everything the globe can draw. Each row is one source, and each carries its own small controls.

Movement — satellites, live flights, military flights, your own local ADS-B receiver, live vessels, street traffic, transit and bike share.
Cameras — public cameras, Recent Imagery (fresh satellite passes), and Street Level.
Infrastructure — mapped ALPR cameras, mapped installations, data centers, submarine cables and dams.
Events — rocket launches, earthquakes, active fires and fire perimeters.
Weather — wind, radar, satellite, lightning and cyclone advisories.
Utilities — directions and radio. Radio plays public internet stations; the same panel also carries a local RTL-SDR receiver, which can tune FM or decode ADS-B from your own hardware.
A few rows need a key, or a device plugged in, before they can draw. The row itself says which.

Traffic

Street Traffic draws the road network and colours it by how it is moving.
Three road sources sit on the layer row: TomTom, OSM and Hybrid. TomTom and Hybrid need a TomTom key; without one the layer draws OpenStreetMap roads and says so.
Where live flow is available it is matched onto the roads; where it is not, the layer shows a modelled estimate rather than pretending to know.

Flights & vessels

Live Flights follows aircraft reported by public ADS-B feeds, and Live Vessels follows ships reported over AIS.
Both are keyless. Turn them on in DATA LAYERS ▸ Movement, then click any contact for its details.
The DISPLAY panel's 3D control swaps flat icons for aircraft models as you move closer.

Voice

The microphone in the bottom dock turns on voice. Hold Space to speak and release to send; a card on screen shows what was heard and what the globe is doing about it.
You can ask about what you are looking at: hold Space while pointing at a place and the question carries that target with it.
Voice runs on OpenAI's realtime service, so it needs an OpenAI key — the POWER UP surface in the dock is where that goes. A small cost readout sits beside the microphone.

Scenes

The SCENES panel turns the globe into a small director: a scene is a list of shots, and each shot records where the camera was and what was switched on.
CAPTURE SHOT saves the current view; START plays the list back, NEXT steps through it by hand, and STOP ends the run.
EXPORT PRESETS writes a scene out as a file you can keep or share, and IMPORT reads one back in.

Draw & navigate

DISPLAY ▸ Draw lets you sketch directly on the world: choose an area, a line or a pin, click to place it, and double-click or press Enter to finish. Escape cancels.
Directions draws a route between two points without needing a routing key.
The LOCATION bar in the bottom dock searches places by name or by coordinates, and the city pills jump between well-known views.
Keyboard shortcuts: 1–7 pick a visual style, H the HUD, F the layer panel, D the detection overlay, C cameras, V clean view, O orbit.

Keys & availability

The globe flies keyless. Every key you add switches on one more real feed, and the POWER UP surface in the dock lists exactly what each one buys.
Google Street View stays dormant until a Google Maps key is configured; until then Mapillary carries Street Level on its own.
Some camera feeds are republished by their operators only occasionally, and a few public sources rate-limit heavy use. When a feed is quiet, the panel says so rather than showing a stale frame as live.
Anything drawn from a public source is credited at the bottom of the globe.
